Water; the most basic element in which life begins and continues …. In fact, I think nature tells us something here. Although it has great importance, it is colorless, transparent, tasteless, odorless. It doesn't even have its own size. It takes the shape of its environment. It is as if nature shows us that we should be simple, humble but beneficial individuals to the world like water.
Water has been used in many ways in architecture. In fact, sometimes architecture was used for water, and sometimes water was used for architecture. Since water is so necessary, people always chose to settle in areas such as rivers and lakes. But as the population grew and cities formed, water had to be moved to homes. For this purpose, aqueducts were built, fountains and public fountains were built in the neighborhoods, water tunnels were used to carry water from underground, houses were built on them and water was supplied from the wells. Cisterns were built to collect rain. In modern times dams were built. Bridges overrun the waters. These and other similar architectural structures were designed and constructed to carry, collect, control water.
Water has been used to add positive effects to many architectural works. Although water is more envisaged to be used in fluid form, there are also examples of buildings that the other forms of water is used, such as the Ice Hotel in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden, or at the Neuchatel lake in Switzerland, the Blurry Building, which is surrounded by a cloud of water vapor.
In buildings where water is used as part of its designs, it gives light, movement or calmness, separation or merging to the architecture of the buildings. The cascading water at Frank Lloyd Wright's Waterfall house, the pool in front of the Taj Mahal, the water around the El Hemisfere entertainment and cultural center designed by Calatrava in Valencia, or the pool at Zaha Hadid's Guangzhou Opera House are good examples.
The effect and benefit of water is also important indoors. Since ancient times, the sound of water has been used in psychiatric treatment. The pools used in the interiors of the palaces would give people calmness with a beautiful visuality and the sound of water. In fact, it was prevented by the sound of water that the conversations inside could not be heard from the outside. In addition, in hot weather, indoors thanks to these pools, coolness is also obtained. In Safranbolu houses, some mansions had pools in the middle of the living area. One reason for this was that they gave coolness and calmness, and another was used as a water tank in case of fire.
Today, the water elements such as ornamental pools, water curtains, wall waterfalls are used to add the interior, movement or calmness also.
